VOIP - Voice Over Internet Protocol

VOIP is a means of allowing users to talk over the internet, one of the most popular ways this is used is "skype", skype is a program that allows users to make calls to landline phone users and to other skype users on their pc allowing people to speak through the internet.

The actual protocol for Internet-based telephone calls was published in March 1999 by the Network Working Group as "Proposed Standard--Request for Comments 2543 (RFC 2543)." Although the phrase "voice over Internet protocol" (VoIP) is not actually used in the document, this is origin of the VoIP standard.
